All Scale Trek

I was perusing another Trek site- one that I've long since abandoned contributing to. Noted a thread about antiheros and compassion for those characters on ST:D...

It made me think about the characters more on the show. Mostly, it made me think about if I really care what happens to anyone. And it's mindboggling that I don't. Not even the ship itself.

The writers and creators have managed to create a Trek show that I really don't care for some how.

Will Lorca die? Who cares?

Does Michael have any redeeming qualities? No, and who cares what happens to her?

Stamis? He's a jerk and his character is erratic. I really don't care what happens to him.

Anyone? No. They've managed to make everyone such jerks, or so shallow, and have no natural interactions with each other, that I just don't care if they live or die.

Even the ship... They've shown nothing about it. Said nothing really about it... It's boring. Just a ship- not a character.

I was not a fan of Voyager, but they've somehow made me see more value in that, than in this. Sheesh.

Anyone else here feel the same, or am I just being over sensitive about this? Maybe I'm just getting old.

Haven't been watching the show because I refuse to pay for it. BUT I understand that people were touched about Captain Georgiou

You know, I forget about her. And while I wouldn't go so far as to have an emotional attachment to her character, I can say, she was the best character presented to date on ST:D

She was strong, had conviction, compassion, and was overall a likable character. She felt like a Starfleet Captain- Star Trek character. And that's the one gone from the show. They keep the assholes.

I do have to say subsequent shows have steadily strayed away from treating the hero ship like a character. In TOS and TNG, the Enterprise was a character. So much so that to me the saddest scene in the movies is the self-destruct sequence in ST: III. It's not even the grey lady, it's the Refit, but I still get sad about it. I had less of an emotional attachment to the Defiant when the NX was destroyed or to Voyager (probably because it felt like she was never really under any type of threat). Even less so with the NX.

You know the scene when the Galactica "broke her back" in the finale? That was emotional, like the ship did everything to get her crew to a certain point until she couldn't take it any more. That felt real, reminiscent of the self-destruct sequence

I agree with most of this here but the Defiant's death was actively painful for me. Maybe it's because I was young and had grown up with that more than any other ship other than the E-D, but lord, I felt like a part of me died, too. The way that it clearly hurt Sisko also drove it home.

I totally get that about ST:D, too. I like Dr. Culber, Ens. Tilly, and Cmdr Saru. Also, the shuttles are kewel. Otherwise, that’s about it. I enjoy the show alright as a SciFi show, just not at all as a Trek show set in the timeframe it’s supposed to be. If they’d put it in the post-TNG/DS9/VOY Eras and changed the “Klingons” to some new alien race, I could enjoy it as Trek.

And you’re right about TNS BSG, el gato. That last Jump that The Bucket made, and then the pronouncement that she was finished made me tear up a bit, too. And TNS BSG is a show that started strong, kept going well for the first full season, then started going downhill just over halfway thru the second season. By the end of the series, I really only liked 5 characters, sincerely disliked half of the remaining and then was kinda hoping to see the others meet horrible, painful deaths. So much for “gritty”, “realistic”, dark characters. Only a handful of the characters were worth saving at the end, IMNSHO.

Seriously, you're right, Sisko looked hurt. I guess I didn't bond with the Defiant

I never really got into BSG. Watched the first few, and it just bored me. That shaky cam and unbelievably long silences between characters staring at each other just bored me to tears... Maybe I'll try it again though. Some shows tend to grow on me when I give them a second chance. Like ST: Enterprise oddly enough (that I just binge watched the entire series).

While people are lamenting over ships, did no one shed a tear for poor sabotaged Excelsior?

I tend to get all emotional (ugh) seeing the E-E getting fixed up at the end of ST:N, and it's not even my favorite ship. They just seem to always make the Enterprises seem like a character of the show somehow.

Starfleet is so bigoted- that's why both failed.
