Acetone on plastic

Postby Blueshirt named Green » Fri Aug 25, 2017 6:06 pm

So,i did really bad job with primer and now i need to get it of my plastic kit. There aren't any simple green or other similar cleaners in my country. After many failed attempts with various products(None of them were true paint strippers,by the way),i decided to use nail polish removal with acetone. It immediatly dissolved through most of the paint and primer, but didn't touched the plastic itself. So the question:can acetone dissolve plastic?Specificly, the one that kits are made out of?

No, it won't harm the plastic. I left a 1/2500 Reliant soaking for 3 hours with only the paint and the decals being softened. I had to scrub and soak several times with a soft toothbrush to remove all paint

I used one of those oven shelf cleaners in a bag (from poundland) to take 20 year old enamel paint off worked well and no damage to the plastic

Ok.I was wrong.Acetone only took paint but not the primer. It's just really sloppy priming job. However i found out that white spirit cleans primer rather well.Does anybody know if it damages plastic?

I wouldn't use it on plastic as itcan bteak it down and make it go soft. If inany doubt use some on a bit of old sprue the you cut the model off to test it.
