Red 7 B-Wing Build

Post by Richard Baker »

I have not posted much on this forum but wanted to get the ball rolling. The builds I am sharing have been seen online elsewhere but I think can provide an insight as to where my head is at in my approach to modeling. One thing that is important to me has giving the subjects a history- you are seeing a snapshot of now with prior moments implied with detailing. The next couple of builds I went a bit more into the backstory.

Red 7 B-Wing

It is the SDCC Edition B-Wing. I figure there were enough people building it to match the filming model so I gave mine two additional twists.
The first is that I made it Red 7. There was some discussion a while back about how the wing stripes on the X-Wings could show numbers higher than the five the space allowed for, I thought gaping them would work so I used that on this fighter. I also though the long fuselage strip on the X-Wings would look nice on the main wing of this build so Red 7 was born.
The Second was giving it a bit of history. The SDCC has a couple of missing panels at the bottom of the main wing with exposed greebly. the stock version of the kit has an exposed panel up at the top that the SDCC version has a plug for. I liked it open so I added some mechanical bits behind it. I then started thinking- why leave these two areas open. What I came up with was that this particular fighter was damaged in it's last battle. The mechanics did not have time to do a proper repair so the power feeds the blast tore apart and just ran a couple of bypasses along the outside instead. This to me gives a reason for those missing panels and sort of embraces the feel for the Rebels doing whatever it takes to get things battle ready without having the time or materials to do it in a fancy way.

As mentioned there are still a couple of things I think still need to be done for this build but I am going to put in on the shelf for a while and just enjoy it a bit...

The B-Wing is one of my favorite fighters, sad we never got a chance to see it really do it's thing on screen due to filming g complications.

If you have ever seen the movie adaptation of 'Lost in Space' it begins with a space battle scene using "Bubble Fighters"- these blade like ships have a spherical cockpit off center in the middle but it does give you an idea of how cool a B-Wing in ful combat mode would look'

Adywan, the fellow who made the excellent ANH & ESB fan edits with corrected (and additional) SFX is working to complete the RotJ now. He is going to be adding additional scenes at the Battle of Endor featuring the B-Wings. He build cockpit sets and is working on the battle scenes.
Lucas wanted to show off these cool fighters but the ILM bluescreen caused strobing and they just ran out of time and dumped the footage, using A-Wings for some of the planned action.

Nice job on that Red 7!

My favorite fighter design from Star Wars.

Such a shame the B-Wings didn't have more screen time, but they were too thin in profile when in attack mode to be seen correctly with the Blue Screen process, as Richard Baker explained. I'm surprised Lucas did not add them back in for the Special Edition...but that probably would've been too time consuming and expensive (for him anyway).

Disney has completely ignored them from what I've seen so far, except for the very brief glimpse of a newer model at the end of Rise of Skywalker.
