Roud 2 New 1/1000 scale Oberth and BoP for 2018.

Postby Rio » Sat Dec 23, 2017 4:28 am

Sweet news!
Round 2 will be releasing 2 new kits in 1/1000 scale, both packed in the same box for 2018.
The Oberth and BoP.
According with their blog posting, it appears if enough interest is generated, they could consider a 1/350 scale. Time will tell.

Keep in mind that those are Test Shots. Rarely does the final product look like the TS’s that we’re shown once it releases. That, and these TS’s are almost always rough around the edge. They’re generally close on basic dimensions and layout of details, tho the fine details of the final product always changes up, usually for the better.

If they're making these in 1000, they could also be paving the way for eventually releasing them in 2500. After all, they've already invested in getting them drawn. Now you just have to resize the drawing.

There is the small matter of the injection molds. These are EX-pen-sive. That is in truth the greater part of the cost of bringing a kit to production.

You still need the molds milled and polished till they shine. CNC makes it cheaper than it once was, but it is still a considerable investment. Smaller models are more finicky to mill.

You see what happened to the Defiant. R2 pushed that old uniquely scaled model for as long as they could and only considered replacing it when it cracked.

True, but it's still a cost saving nevertheless

I wonder which would be least expensive, to rework the Cadet mold of the E-B into an Excelsior, or create a new one from the plans for the 1/1000 parts to build the NX or NCC version.

Still, another Movie set could cover III and IV with the Grissom, BoP (with an optional small "HMS Bounty" decal) and an Enterprise with scorch decals for The Search for Spock or 1701-A for The Voyage Home. The next one can have the Excelsior, BoP in "fire while cloaked" clear, and a K'tinga with decals to do it as Kronos One.
