South Bend’s reconfigurable Enterprise toy (1979?)

Postby trynda1701 » Thu Nov 08, 2012 6:07 pm

Here's an article that may be of historical interest to you all.

These days, Star Trek modeling is a small but varied collection of different scales. From my personal interests of 1/3788 and 1/3900 gaming miniatures, thru the original AMT kits (original Enterprise, D-7 and Romulan Bird of Prey), thru to the current market. Now there will be many models and minis I haven't seen, but from back when Star Trek:The Motion Picture came out, how many people have seen this model?

Just thought I would let people see this.

I sort of think I've seen this somewhere before, because I remember that I didn't understand why there were rectangle insert slots on the bottom of the secondary hull, and I thought it looked stupid. I think I saw it at yard sale. Now that I see it assembled in different configurations, I totally get the concept. Thanks for sharing!

As I said over on Brad Torgersens site, imagine the games we FASA gamers could have played making up different Federation designs with this! :D

I would have LOVED to have one of those as a kid. It would have been a blast to pretend to be a starship designer and try all different configurations.

I've got a couple of these, they're pretty cool and certainly unique. The flashing red bridge dome and wailing siren are a bit puzzling though.

Well, the red light would fit Red Alert status, but I take it the sound effect doesn't match?

Hang on, got it, the Enterprise is the Police!

Klingon Helmsman: "Commander, Federation battle cruiser Enterprise approaching, weapons armed"

Klingon Commander: "ghuy'cha' its the Feds, foiled again, prepare for battle!"

I had one. Didnt the warp sound change pitch as you changed the angle of the ship?
