Carson Paint Killer *RECOMMENDED*

Post by MadManMUC »

Any of you chaps have experience with this product? I came across it at my local hobby shop this afternoon, and it claims to remove, among others, Tamiya TS paint off all sorts of things — including resin — without damaging the material.

Wanted to check in with you lot before picking it up. I’m thinking I could give it a go on my DLM inboard flux chiller grilles.

Anyway, here’s the product page (only in German, but Google Translate should do the trick :D):

Before I used it on a model I'd try it out on some scrap styrene or resin. Paint it with whatever you are thinking of using on your model. Let it cure for a week then try this stuff on it.

Let us know. I've never heard of it and I know Tamiya paint is a bee ach to remove.

Well, gents (and ladies, if we've got any!), I went out and bought this product this afternoon, and tested it on a small portion of one of my Tamiya TS-sodden grilles. All I can say is:

Wow.

Does exactly what it says on the tin. It took a few minutes of rubbing with a product-soaked cotton bud, but I could clearly see it working a treat. The bud was black when I was done, and the spot I tried it on was Tamiya rattle can paint-free.

I can confidentally recommend this stuff. It's reasonably priced (€10/£9/$15 CAD/$12 USD/$15 AUD for a 100 ml bottle), and a little goes a long way — from what I can see — so it will last a good while. Also comes in a spray can for large applications, like a primary hull.

And now, to bring those damned DLM grilles back from the dead!

I've been Googling, too, and haven't come up with one. However, I'm fairly certain a good hobby shop could probably special order it (at a higher cost, probably), though I have found one vendor here in Germany that ships to the US (€38 for shipping though ... ouch!).

The two ingredients in the product are 1-methoxy-propan-2-ol (some Dow Chemical invention) and ethyl acetate, so it could be there's a comparable product on the US market.

Yeah, usually there are "equivalent" products that are marketed under different names on both sides of the Atlantic. I'll have to keep my eye out
