DY-500

Postby Kremin » Sun Jan 14, 2018 9:24 am

DY-500 first mentioned as an incorrect identification for Khan's ship in TOS "Space Seed"

Speculative design in the Spaceflight Chronology

She is bigger and bulkier than the DY-100 and the cargo pods don't look to stick out as far from the hull

Starting getting the parts together to kitbash this using various rocket related parts

The forward section is relatively easy to get looking right

The Warp Drive I'm going to change as the TNG massive thruster exhaust just doesn't sit right with me so I'm considering how to put 1 or 2 nacelles on it, most likely they will be short and stubby, if I go with 2 there will be a small hull piece in between them

The sail/conning tower and fins will need to be cut from styrene so let the computer do the hard work and cut the shapes for me

First step; put the picture of what i want to cut and size it correctly then draw the shapes including any surface details that will be added later

Copy and or rotate as needed, with the plastic being as thin it needs between 2 - 4 layers laminated together.

Repeat for other parts and add bits to reinforce the final structure until you fill the sheet, then cut

the cut doesn't go right through the plastic so the parts have to be snapped out and you end up with a big pile of bits

gluing will start tomorrow........

Kremin, this is looking awesome!!

In case I missed it, what program are you using to plan the parts and bits? (NVM. I blew up one of your screen grabs and looked for myself. )

You're doing a great job here! Enjoying the thread.

Keep going!

cool!
a DY-500, that reminds me of "Stingray" quite a lot.

by the by,
I'm in awe of your ability to break down the ship into the components like that.

Thanks guys it's coming along nicely

Sail / Conning tower
the cut pieces were glued together leaving a hollow in between and reinforced with plasticard squares then some 2 part epoxy to further strengthen the joints

With the two sides glued together the curve at the back was clamped, glued and epoxied

smlImg_3911.jpg

the gaps and seams were then filled initially with Das air drying clay and dried and rough sanded

smlImg_3915.jpg

After more sanding and smoothing I attached the raised detailing

and gave it a try to see how it looked on the hull

Engineering

After much head scratching and trying different parts I've decided on the engineering section and nacelles

Twin Nacelles

I'll have to drill through engineering for the nacelle supports and sort out the fins then we might be ready for some primer

More like the DIY-500! :robot:

Impressive build!

I'm curious -- do you have extra stuff lying around and decide "what can I build with this?" or do you decide what you want to build and have so much stuff laying around that you can match up anything?

Erm ..... Yes Slawton

I'm a hoarder I keep everything and I see shapes in objects that i have in the stash.

The stash increased massively over the last 3-4 years just be keeping a look out on ebay and facebook, buying as cheap as I can even if it's part started or broken / incomplete kits i'm buying them for parts so it doesn't always matter.

The Airfix Saturn V Skylab is a great source of parts (I've had 8 of them over the last few years) the relay station was mostly made using this kit because i scored 3 of them cheaply just before christmas.

The first step is find a plan of what I want to build and print it out to scale and then look through the parts to see if there is anything that works or can be adapted from this lot

with the DY-500 I found the nose of the Ariane 5 from Revell 1/96 was a good fit, bits of a 1/144 space station and Saturn 5 and a leftover tail of a submarine
