To me the front end is more reminiscent of the Protector from Galaxy Quest

I can see it! Of course, I can see Galaxy Quest in almost anything! But I like where this conversation is going!

I kinda get that vibe, too!

I know Seth McFarland is a Trekker, but I have to wonder if he is also a Sci-Fi nerd/geek, too, and has seen the same shows we have. Maybe that's where he got his inspiration for suggesting the design.

On the kids with gauges - the kid with the hoodie, Meatloafr, has issues - not to mention probably bad oral hygiene and difficulties eating.

Anyway, Tally ho!

You're supposed to check out her mother to find out ahead of time...

Well I just managed to see the first episode and whilst visually (and with the added humour) it definitely has the feel of Galaxy Quest, the shuttle flight to the Orville and the near miss by Malloy while goofing around was straight out spoof of the travel pod scene from both TMP and Enterprise (Broken Bow). Loved the trick with the Redwood though.....

Pleasantly surprised by this as I had feared a SciFi comedy would go the Red Dwarf or, god forbid, Quark route. Thankfully the Galaxy Quest analogy holds up although there is a faint hint of the short lived series Hyperdrive (but none of that shows over the top slap stick "humour".

And in case you missed Hyperdrive (ship design aside you didn't miss much)
