How do you guys mix/thin paint?

Postby NCC1966 » Mon Jul 18, 2016 7:38 pm

I usually do it by counting drops. I dip the tip of a toothpick into the paint can and let it drop into a thimble while I count. I sincerely don't like too much this method because it is very tedious when I am preparing big amounts of paint, but it has demonstrated to be the most precise to repeat mixes and to balance the quantity of thinner.

How do you do that? Pipette...? Beaker...?

:?:
Thanks,

Yan.

Pipette is easiest to measure - if you have one that has measuring marks on it great, otherwise mark your own on a new one or just count the drops

I've used the syringes from my inkjet refill kits for this.
they come in 2 sizes (either CC or ML) and have needles with blunt tips so I don't get poked .
the sides are marked with measurements so you can be precise :)

I'm not picky on measurment of my paint, so I count in drops like you. The only problems I've had was remembering the drop ratios for certain shades I've mixed.

Something to be said for taking notes.

You're really really not wrong, Moongrim. I even have the ability to write it down in my phone's note pad. I'll try to maintain that instead of wasting tons of paint (like I did this weekend...). :(

I'm more of a "about right" kind of guy.

For thinning paint, I do a 50/50 mix, but that's more or less 50/50... A quick look will tell me if it is thinned too much/too little... And sometimes, I want it too be thinner than usual, so I adapt the ratio to the situation...

For custom mix, I do it by eye too. I take notes so I can replicate the shade if I need to, but as long as it is "about right", i's ok. I don't bother trying to get it "exactly right"...
