FASA Orion Wanderer Blockade Runner

Post by Griffworks » Thu Sep 21, 2017 1:38 am

I purchased this off of Shapeways and it arrived yesterday.

https://www.shapeways.com/product/3ASS2 ... d=63088875

It required a BUNCH of sanding on the forward hull perimeter because of how the original model was designed. I've sanded, primed, sanded, and primed one more time, specifically working on the forward hull, the two underslung pods, and the warp nacelles, trying to take the angular sections out of the equation. So far, I'm mostly happy with it.

The model is roughly 7.75" / 19.7cm long, by 2.5" / 65cm wide. It was printed in WSFP (White, Strong, Flexible, and Polished). The model surface is still rough in several areas, tho the sanding and Tamiya Surface Primer has taken most of that out of it. Still a little more sanding needed, but I'm done with that for the day. Having a couple drinks in honor of the passing of a friend. :(

Sand, prime, sand, prime... You can see how I got the angles down on the forward hull, as well as the two pods below. I've also softened the angles on the extended hull. I think I'll keep them like that.

More to come.

Your Dremel is still working after you sanded that down? Wow

No word on sanding drum casualties however.

True. Griff's lack of cussing gives me hope there were survivors

Ha! You guys are hilarious!

I did not use the Dremel. That would've been too easy, and I'm a masochist! So, I hand sanded the whole thing. It gives better control, plus there were some tight spaces needing to be gotten to.

Priming and sanding is done. Now I just have to suss out what color(s) to go with. I'm kinda leaning towards maybe platinum as the base. Something a little different.

I took these to give a better idea of the overall size of the model next to a Constitution-class model - built by my youngest son.

Hand sanded WSF? I did that for hours one day and only made a small dent. What grit of sandpaper were you using? One?

The first three times I used 220, then the last was 600.
