R-Type Stations

Postby Griffworks » Tue Jan 23, 2018 3:55 am

It just occured to me that I never posted pics of these stations here. Let’s fix that oversight on my part....

A 3D printed model available from Shapeways. It's the Regula One space station from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and is in 1/1000 scale.

The ship seen in several pics is the USS Potemkin, NCC-1711. It's a Round 2 / Polar Lights Refit kit with several extras from Federation Models: an Abbe-class bridge, Split Impulse Engine, and Ascension-class nacelles. It's based off a similar build I did around 10 years ago in 1/537 scale.

Anyhow, back to the station!

This will be a StarFleet Neutral Zone outpost Station. Not sure which, tho am leaning towards the Klingon Neutral Zone. I intend to add phaser banks and photorp tubes. Still not 100% sure where they’ll be added, but have given it definite thought. Prolly a total of 8 single-mount Phaser emitters and two dual photorp tube locations.

This was printed in WSFP (White, Strong, Flexible, and Polished). It’s sort of a nylon-like material.

Overall length is 7.9” / 20cm long/tall.

When I got this model there was a printing defect. I contacted Shapeways, notifying them about the defect and asking how they wanted to proceed. I was hoping for a like 10% or 20% off credit. Next thing I know, I received notification of a new order placed for me - at no charge.

So, I have two of these stations. The second is being painted to represent Regula One. There’s not a whole lot of differences in color, so

Showing the damaged area. This is why I didn’t demand a replacement and only hoped for some sort of discount.

And now with 100% more primer!

And again, R1 on the left, G13 on the right.

More to come.

Here are some more recent pics of Gamma 13. I’ve done some detail painting, breaking up the surface a bit more.

I’m really liking the difference in colors between the two stations. And I especially like the breakup of colors on Gamma 13. I’m planning out the Phaser emplacements, as well as the photorp emplacements.

I would have gone with the "upside down" version from TMP

I just wish it as practical and affordable to print it in 1/350

I always felt the office complex was smaller than Regula 1 as this shot in TMP showing a workbee train coming out

Sssooooo... nothing on the model itself...?

I’m more a fan of the Regula One configuration from the old FASA days. They listed the station as an R-Type, IIRC (not at home, so can’t pull up my reference materials), which was basically a modular system.

I always imagined it being utilized almost like US Military Services have various pre-fabricated buildings and other shelters that can be erected quickly and which are also mission configurable, to a degree. While that would obviously fit the bill for both the Orbital Drydock Office Complex, I liked the idea they could be somewhat beefed up to work as listening posts and/or re-suppply stations.

My thinking for G-13, and her sisters, is that she fills a multi-mission role along the Klingon Neutral Zone. They are meant to work as a sort of Forward Operating Base that has limited re-supply capacity for ships in the sector it controls, has beefed up weapons and shield systems, and the latest on both passive and active sensor systems. The shield generation systems are on par with a K-Series station. They can generate a field large enough to encompass several Class 1 starships, as many as six and still allow for the station to keep her fields of fire clear enough to be effective.

The M/AM System for these stations is also on par with the K-Series, heavily modified for the smaller station.

And there’s more Yada-Yada in my head.

Anyhow.....
