ST Discovery Federation Ships in 1/1400

Postby Dr_Corsa » Tue Sep 26, 2017 7:48 pm

Hi!

So I watched the first 2 episodes right now. Actually not sure, if I like it or not...need more episodes and time.

BUT there are so many new ships on screen. Who will release them in plastik or resin in 1400 scale?

Greeting,
Micha

Way too early to tell. If they capture Dennis' imagination, Starcrafts will do them and will hopefully do them in 1/1400. The Eaglemoss sculptures may already be close to 1/1400 scale, however, so I guess we'll have to see.

I think that, for now, there's probably too much of a lack of 'technical' information around the ships — as well as clear on-screen reference material — to properly scale any potential model. I find it's either mostly sort-of close-ups, or really bad lighting, or they're on-screen for too short a time to really make anything out.

The clear shots we do have, though, make me think these ship designs aren't especially nice to look at.

Exhibit A: USS Europa:

That paint job is just obnxious — especially the aztecing — and I just find the overall design completely un-appealing. Looks almost like the built those nacelles out of Lego.

To say nothing of not-especially-canon. Sorry, but proper aztecing and Eurostile/Microgramma Bold Extended weren't introduced on Federation starships until the TMP-era.

(Unless you count Enterprise. Which I don't. Because I thought it was a rancid canon-violating turd of a series.)

While I enjoyed the show, it entertained me, I'm not a big fan of any of the ships, I won't be getting any models if any are ever made as models. Same with JJ's universe, the movies entertained me but the ships never struck with me any awe so that I had to have any models of them.

I just saw clearer shots of the Shengzhou on the Eaglemoss site ... am I the only one that thinks it looks like a 1970s Cylon Raider with a couple of nacelles slapped on?

I do like the look of the Shengzhou...

Discovery not so much.. looks like a cardboard model (IE too boxey and flat)

Looks like a post-Voyager era take on the Centaur class.

Ever get the feeling the TPTB behind Discovery could have saved themselves a lot of grief from fans if they had done two small tweaks:

1) Set DISC decades after the events from Nemesis and

2) Burnham's connection to Vulcan is with someone not named Sarek

Pretty much. There's no reason so far the story has to be a prequel. It would have been pretty easy to set this decades after Nemesis, with the anti-federation of the Empire rising back to power (even without Duras around you could always tell there was a significant chunk of Klingons who were never in favor of the alliance), and replace Sarek with basically any other Vulcan (hell, have Tuvok raise her) and I'd be downright excited about all of it.
