Runabout lighting

Post by justabbs1977 » Sun Mar 17, 2019 12:18 pm

Can anyone point me in the right direction to where I can buy a lighting kit for Amy/ertl runabout model. I have seen lighting kits on ebay but not sure if they are compatible or not

Currently out of stock but you can sign up for a waiting list- they are pretty good at restocking.

Wait, there are actually dedicated lighting sets for some specific models? Is it dedicated to spaceships or is it a whole thing in the modeling world I've missed since day one? Because I've rigged a couple light systems for some plane models, and the quality of the result was as low as it was hard to solder it myself and stuff it into the model

Yeah there’s people that make them for most major kits, but are typically 3x the cost of you do it yourself

What is you time worth? And your skill level with electronic fiddly bits?

Time is the main factor, parts are cheap - can get most of them for for a few bucks each (and enough for a few models) but time and space to do it can be hard

A lot depends on the lighting kit supplier as well- some are insert and go, others give you all the materials and assembled circuit boards but you have to solder them up yourself.

General light is easy to do yourself, but if you want something special, like the lighted pilot ring for the Moebius Proteus kit or Bussard dome lights for Trek models, it is easier to get one already known to work. Fancy lighting with formation lights and strobes blinking have ready made kits which can adapt to a lot of different uses.
Go to the CultManTV site and look under lighting, they have a good selection but there are more out there.

Personally I hate spending more on accessory details, lighting and photoetch than what I paid for the model, but there are times where time and easy of ready materials is worth it.

Okay, thanks for the answer! I've looked for offers appropriate for the kits I have in my stash, and there's maybe 1 in 20 that have a light set created for them. Time to work on my soldering skills, I guess!

Really don’t even have to solder anymore - there’s a lot of quick connect wireing systems and LED strips to use
