I drilled a hole and embedded a pair of small rare earth magnets, then covered the hole with very thin styrene. I'll use epoxy later to secure them. Now the really big magnets in the cobra head have something substantial to grab on to. So far it seems to bear up under weight. 
I should start a build thread in the 1/1400 forum maybe.
