Shiftdel´s upcoming 1/2500 scale trek fleet on Shapeways

Postby shiftdel » Mon Jul 13, 2015 12:41 pm

Hello

Here are some of the models that I am working to release at my Shapeways shop, in 1/2500 scale.

One is a non-canon Federation Heavy Frigate, Joshua Paul, an Excelsior kitbash, based on Miranda class, showed on Jackill Starfleet Manual:

The other is also a non-canon (or almost canon) design created for DS9, but probably never showed on screen. It is an Excelsior kitbash, You can see a pic of the studio model in here: http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/scans/drex/hutzel.jpg

I really like the Hutzel design, some references show it upside down, but the correct orientation is the one at the pics above (which looks way better, IMHO).

To make the models more affordable, I had to hollow them, to reduce the overall volume, as Shapeways charges by volume and machine space, and they are relatively big ships. Because of that, I will add a sprue with parts to cover the holes.

Thanks, I tried to make it as close to the reference pics as possible, yet making it sturdy to survive the print process at this scale.

BTW, I am accepting requests; if anyone have a ship that would like to see in this scale, I can try it. The only thing to be in mind is the size constraints, too large = expensive, too tiny = unprintable, in this case, tiny details would also be difficult to reproduce.

as long as you ask permission from Masao, i doubt he would mind

Well, if you are open to requests, then I have two that no one seems to have made models for yet. There is the Dawnstar class (http://jetfreak-7.deviantart.com/art/Da ... -182864346), though it may be too big. It seems to be about the same size as the Ambassador class. And then there is the Lancaster class from the Starfleet Museum (http://www.starfleet-museum.org/lancaster.htm).

The Joshua Paul looks cool. I want to get one down the track; it would make a great 24th century tender.

OK, I will try them, and I agree that Dawstar may be too big, big I will check its volume, probably it would need to be split in 2 or 3 parts, in order to get it easier to print (as its a matter of volume and space)

Thanks for looking into those. It would be awesome if the Dawnstar could be done. Having one on a shelf would be fantastic.

I´d take a look at size references, and found 575, 593 or 653 m, I´d also took my own measurements, based upon the bridge module, which is similar to the Akira one, which gave me 602 m.

Saying this, I would stay with the smaller size (575 m), which is still too big to be affordable for 3d printing, I will do some testing with a hollowed model to see if it is possible to get a reasonable price.

Just thinking out loud.

But you could also branch out to 1/1000 and 1/1400 parts scale as well.

What I'd have in mind: Conversion Parts. Say...the horizontal Warp Engine Pylons to convert a PL 1/1000 Enterprise Refit into a Balson class.
http://www.shipschematics.net/startrek/ ... balson.jpg

Or a secondary hull for an Ariel Class
http://www.shipschematics.net/startrek/ ... _ariel.jpg

But it's just an idea.
There are Times, Sir, when men of good Conscience cannot blindly follow orders. You acknowledge their sentience, but ignore their personal liberties and freedoms. Order a man to hand over his child to the state? Not while I"m captain.
