USS Aurangzeb (3D print excursion) Complete

Post by WarpNein » Sun Nov 05, 2017 2:59 am

I have quite a few of these things lying around now, and it's about time I got around to painting them. Since I've never tackled painting a 3D print before, I thought I'd document the experience.

This is Raja's Intelligence, from EnergyEquals on Shapeways, available here: https://www.shapeways.com/product/DD8CZ ... d=61859807

I quite like the design. It suggests Sovereign refit to me, with the huge angled nacelles looking like something that might have been developed to employ slipstream drive. At any rate, the ship needed a few more details, so I dug through my leftovers and found a bridge module and fashioned some additional impulse engines for the dorsal surface, since the place they would normally be exhausts right onto the nacelle struts.

As far as the model itself, the 3D print worked pretty well for WSF (which I chose because FUD is stupidly, painfully expensive). It has some striations in it, but that could work to my advantage when it comes time to aztek it. It's disastrous for decals, so I'm going to be hand-painting everything. This will be fun.

Here she is unfinished:

The area of the Bussard is HUGE. Might be a little too huge.

Other wise a nice looking ship.

Dorsal features are starting to take shape.

Hmm, a bit washed out in retrospect. I never said I was any good at photography.

Overall, I like this ship design.

However — if I can be permitted a moment of critique — I find the warp engines look/feel way out of proportion, relative to the rest of the ship; and their overall shape doesn't feel like a natural extension of the rest of the design.

I don't mean to be negative, it's just my (hopefully considered) opinion!
DANGER. SPACE DOORS ARE CLOSED.

I would like to see what it looks like with either Ent-E nacelles or Venture nacelles from MVM

Not negative at all. I was drawn to the design for the unusual nacelles. They're not going to be everyone's cup of tea. My idea for her is a tactical reconnaissance ship, a sort of 24th century SR71 with guns, which was suggested by the engines.

I'm actually quite taken with the nacelles, it's what I like most about the ship. That being said you are doing a great job with the painting details!

Detailing the saucer. The escape pods are hell to do by hand, especially on the 3d printed surface, but it's coming along.
