Gizmo Excelsior

Postby mophius » Thu Mar 15, 2018 11:18 pm

Had a break from the usual ships tonight and decided to clean this beauty up.

The Gizmotron Excelsior. I will be building as the NX version this time round. I have another in a safe place that will be the NCC version at some point.

The kit itself is great. You can feel the quality in the resin when you hold it. It is so smooth on the surfaces. This is my first Gizmo kit so excuse my ramblings.
There was some flash on all the parts but where would the fun be if we didn't have to clean up the kits.
Saucer had a fair bit around the Impulse engine and around the circumference. No bubbles on this part so no filling required here.
Neck had some excess resin in the fins but hardly any flash, although this would have been on the joint sections, no bubbles on the outside though. Two bubbles on a join face but they won't be seen.
Secondary hull had a bit of flash but no bubbles. Likewise with the pylon section.
Nacelles had a fair amount of flash which has cleaned up well but again no bubbles present.
The fiddly little parts had a lot of flash but this may be expected due to the size of them. I think the bridge has a couple of bubbles on which will need seeing to before I go any further but the Impulse crystal and forward shuttlebay door are ok.

Well, I have cleaned them, scrubbed them and mostly dried them now I have to wait until tomorrow to do any more on them. I have the day off so will do a little, at least the bridge, during the day.

This kit's a total treat. Since you're building the NX version, find some way of anchoring the aft dorsal shuttlebay piece so that itlays down exactly how you want it. If you're not careful you can glue it askew and it's a paint to pull it out once the glue sets. As you can tell, I speak from experience.

Sounds like epoxy would be best so I can manoeuvre it into place.
I am making a trip to a craft store today so will get some.

Grr, I didn't manage to get the epoxy. Hope I can get some soon as this is now holding me back.

Stage 1.
Togetherness. All parts are now together. If that is a good thing or bad I will find out soon. Epoxy was ok to work with just felt like an age for it to cure and be handled. I think i got the alignment right too, I rushed a little and tried to get it all together in one shot. I should have done it in two but I will know next time not to be so hasty.

Watching with interest. As said. I'm not sure if I should build this OOTB or heavily modify.
