1/2500 unfinished projects #3 & #4. Elkins & Yeager

Post by andyh »

I have finally started to move on my Elkins and Yeager class builds.

Got my primary hull cast so these are nearly finished.

There are some progress shots in this old thread. viewtopic.php?f=9&t=133&start=30

Hi Andyh,
Are you going to build a replica of the studio model or will you make some improvements to the original model ?
Indeed, the Elkins coud get two forward parts from the secondary hull of the NCC-1701-A with Nav. Deflectors (and the two torpedoes launchers as well), that’s what I will do.
The Yeager could benefit from some kind of Nav. Deflector (a rectangular one) on the secondary hull (nose of the Maquis raider, maybe something from a cardassian ship).
Some drawing I found on the web (sorry for the author, I don’t remember):

This the kind of Elkins I’d like to see as a resin kit (or 3D print) ;-)

Interesting version that.

No, mine will be 95% the same as the studio model. The main difference will be the warp nacelles. On the studio model, the 1/537 nacelles and the 1/650ish voyager dont quiet tie in with a true 1/2500 scale nacelle and a 1/2500 Voyager primary hull.

The result is slightly smaller looking nacelles on my model compared to the look of the studio model.

The Yeager will have a small deflector on the nose of the Raider, but probably only represented by paint ;)

I followed the specs on from the studio model except I added a pull tab from a can of compressed air to the aft as a shuttle landing pad (added the landing pad decal from Voyager there too).

I love the Elkins and Yeager from a modelling point of view. Getting to kitbash something “canon” like this was very fun when I did mine. As far as I remember I used OS Voyager saucers, the Maquis raider from the Voyager three ship set and a F-14 Tomcat (or whatever the studio used) I found on eBay, then left over Miranda nacelles. The final paint job on Yeager is weird though! I look forward to seeing yours when they’re done!

Yeah, the studio models were a bit over the top when it comes to paint so I’m aiming for a more subdued paint job, just hinting at the studio colours.

Revived.

Ok, I know I said I wasn’t going to go too close to the studio model paint, but I think it will be fairly representative of the original. I haven’t finished yet, and yes the colours won’t be exact, but I’ve come back to this and have started playing around with the paint job.

Not nearly finished, but you get the idea.
