Do you want a 2018 Group Build or Contest?

now that wf is over i'm entertaining the idea of a group build or a full blown contest with prizes. the prizes depends on whether i can get a gk'er or several gk'ers to donate a kit for at least first place.

so, what do you think? do you want another 'just for fun' group build or something more serious?

idea's i had are below. feel free to offer your input and own idea's.

Idea 1

RPG contest and/or Design a Printed Ship

What I thought at least sounded cool was to have a giant contest. In short, participants would donate "X" amount and become part of the Utopia Planetia development crew. Those members would work together in mini groups to ultimately create a new starship.

One group may design the outline, another would work on schematics as to where things would go, then perhaps one for a render, one for a backstory, etc. The added twist that this would combine RPG with starship design. You could design your RPG character and be allowed two accounts - your regular account for posting in all the forums, and an RPG account for posting within the development threads.

Everyone on the project is a winner at the end. The prize? The ship is printed as an extremely limited run, exclusive only to those that took part.

idea 2 [very basic wip]

when speaking with tesral, he made the comment about just 'getting it done'. i felt that was a good idea for a newbie contest.

my add ons were this:

the unique selling point was to keep it minimal:

a rough outline;

minimal supplies and a choice of a kit or all 3 from a 3 pack to level the playing field. decals -not- needed.

x1 r2 3 pack or just x1 ship from a 3 pack
x1 rattle can
x1 paint for accents or detailing.
x1 super glue
x1 clippers / something to desprue
x1 file
x1 something to fill in the seams

- all items must be presented via a group pic before the build starts.

contest idea 3 [very basic wip]

themes can be one or all of the following;

'what if?' trek theme. paint and even build trek -your 'verse', your way!'

[e.g. what if klingons were a great ally of the feds and had stark white with tos nacelles slung underneath, or on top].

themes can be one or all of the following;

'the special forces of empires!'

think section 31 with a special ship layout. e.g. obsidian order with dark colors and off yellow accents.

contest idea 5 [very basic wip]

themes can be one or all of the following;

'the secret forces of empires: special weapons division'

ships, stations, 'testing' a bfg super phaser, or fly through a rock cloaking device. swarm tech to invade hull integration or core functions in one hit.

section 31, tal shiar and the obsidian order would be all over that.

captured tech from the dom war? breen and other gamma quadrant alients we haven't seen?

backstories not needed, but you get the gist.

contest idea 6 [very basic wip]

themes can be one or all of the following;

'parading the fleet!' what would your ships look like fresh out of the shipyards? a twist, maybe any paint 'livery' for a military parade scheme?

think captain picard in that all white capt dress uniform from the last tng movie.

i'm just 'projecting' here folks. i don't care if they suck or not.

themes can be one or all of the following;

'imagine this...' minimal kitbash challenge.

find -one- object. paint it.
make it look like a ship.

2nd price is for 2 objects used.
3rd prize for 3 objects used.
or all using the same amount.

unique selling point; it's your imagination that wins, not how good the ship is you end up constructing.

contest idea 8 [rough wip]

borgified ships. either, races that have incorporated borg technology, races that already have the same tech or similar, or borg that have assimilated those ships, transforming them.

I'm taking a pass on Contests. I could not get myself started to even run one.

I will however judge as I don't participate.
